At Caldecote Primary School, we believe that music is for everyone. Music brings people together, inspires creativity and plays an important role in children's social, emotional and academic development. Our aim is to inspire a love of music while helping every child develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to become a successful musician.

We want all pupils to enjoy a wide range of musical experiences and to develop confidence, self-esteem and a strong sense of wellbeing through participation in music lessons and performances. 

A Musical Journey Through School

From Reception to Year 6, children develop their musical understanding through singing, listening, composing and performing. Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils build their skills and knowledge year by year. Children explore:

• Singing and vocal performance
• Pulse, rhythm and tempo
• Pitch and melody
• Playing tuned and untuned instruments
• Composition and improvisation
• Musical notation
• Listening and appraising a wide range of music
• Music from different cultures, traditions and historical periods 

Learning Through Performance

Music is an active subject at Caldecote. Children regularly perform, compose and work collaboratively with others. They learn to listen carefully, work as part of an ensemble and develop the confidence to share their music with an audience.

As they progress through the school, pupils learn to read and use musical notation, perform increasingly complex pieces and create their own compositions using a range of musical elements.

Exploring a World of Music

Throughout their time at Caldecote, children experience a diverse range of musical styles and traditions. They explore music from around the world, including West African music, Samba, South African music, Caribbean Calypso, Blues, Baroque music and Musical Theatre. 

These experiences help children develop an appreciation of different cultures while broadening their musical knowledge and understanding.

Developing the Whole Child

Music supports many aspects of children's development. Through music, pupils learn to:

Preparing Young Musicians for the Future

By the time they leave Caldecote Primary School, pupils have developed a secure understanding of the key elements of music and can perform, compose, listen and evaluate with confidence. Most importantly, they leave with a lifelong appreciation of music and the enjoyment, creativity and wellbeing it can bring.
