Young Carers

At Caldecote, we proudly recognise and celebrate the important role that young carers play within their families supporting someone they love because of illness, disability, mental health needs or other challenges. Young carers often show remarkable kindness, responsibility and maturity as they help with a parent, brother, sister or grandparent.

These children develop valuable life skills every day, including empathy, resilience and problem‑solving, and we are proud of the care and commitment they show. We want school to be a place where young carers feel valued, understood and supported. Our staff are always ready to listen and to help ensure that caring responsibilities do not prevent children from enjoying school, friendships and learning. We work closely with families to make sure children can thrive and feel confident to talk to a trusted adult if they need extra help or pastoral care.

Our Young Carer Champion is Mrs Heijne who runs a half termly club of fun activities for our young carers to get together and spend time doing a range of art, craft, sporting and cooking activities.

In Cambridgeshire, additional support is available through Centre 33, a local charity that works with children and young people. Centre 33 provides friendly, confidential support for young carers, giving them a chance to talk about their experiences, meet others who understand, and access helpful advice and activities designed especially for them.

If you think your child may be a young carer, or if you are a child who helps care for someone at home, please speak to Debbie Heijne or visit: Centre 33 to find out more.
