Sports and competition

At Caldecote Primary School, we recognise the vital role that sports and competition play in fostering physical health, teamwork, resilience, and a sense of achievement among pupils. Our commitment to a happy and healthy school environment is reflected in the wide range of sporting opportunities and competitive events available to all pupils.

As a member of the local South Cambs Schools Sports Partnership, we are able to participate in a number of events throughout the year. These events range from new age kurling to cross-country runs. Some of these events are competitive and others are focused on skill building where no experience of the sport is necessary.

Participation in sports encourages pupils to develop key life skills such as discipline, fair play, leadership, and cooperation. Through friendly competitions and team sports, pupils learn to set goals, handle both success and setbacks positively, and support one another in pursuit of shared objectives.

Our inclusive approach ensures that every pupil, regardless of ability or background, has access to physical activities that enhance their wellbeing and build confidence. We also aim to nurture a lifelong enthusiasm for active living, contributing to healthier lifestyles and the development of social and emotional wellbeing.

By embedding sports and competition within the school culture, we support pupils’ personal development and contribute to their readiness for the opportunities and challenges of life in British society.

Each year, during the summer term, we host a vibrant Sports Week that offers all pupils unique and exciting opportunities beyond the scope of our regular PE curriculum. This special week is designed to inspire enthusiasm for physical activity and introduce pupils to a diverse range of sports and movement experiences.

In previous years, we have been privileged to welcome remarkable guests such as Azeem Amir, a blind footballer representing the England Team, the Skipping Ninja—who holds multiple world records for speed skipping and also showcases beatboxing and breakdancing talents—as well as experts in Salsa and Flamenco dancing and golf. These experiences enrich our pupils’ understanding of sport, promote inclusivity, and celebrate a wide variety of physical activities. The week finishes with our annual Sports Day, where we welcome families to join us for the morning whilst pupils rotate around a number of different sports events before competing in flat running races.
