At Caldecote Primary School, we believe that fluent, legible handwriting is an important life skill and a key part of becoming a successful writer. When handwriting becomes automatic, children can focus more on expressing their ideas, developing their vocabulary and crafting high-quality writing. 

Our handwriting curriculum is carefully designed to help every child develop confidence, accuracy and pride in their written work. Using the Teach Handwriting programme, we provide a consistent approach from Reception to Year 6, teaching correct posture, pencil grip, letter formation, joins, spacing and presentation. 

Building Strong Foundations

Handwriting development begins in the Early Years, where children develop the physical skills needed for writing, including hand strength, coordination and pencil control. As they move through the school, children learn to form letters correctly, develop joined handwriting and increase their fluency and stamina.

By the end of Year 6, our aim is for pupils to write with a fluent, joined and legible style that supports their learning across the curriculum.

Handwriting Across the Curriculum

Handwriting is not only taught in dedicated lessons. Children are encouraged to apply their handwriting skills in English and across all subjects, helping them to develop confidence, writing stamina and consistently high standards of presentation. 

Supporting Every Child

We recognise that children develop handwriting skills at different rates. Where appropriate, additional support such as pencil grips or targeted intervention may be provided to help pupils develop an efficient and comfortable writing style. 

Through consistent teaching, regular practice and high expectations, we aim to ensure that every child leaves Caldecote Primary School with the handwriting skills they need to communicate clearly, confidently and effectively.
