At Caldecote Primary School, we believe that every child should leave primary school as a confident, creative, critical and safe user of technology. Our computing curriculum equips children with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world, while encouraging curiosity, problem-solving and responsible decision-making. 

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced from Reception to Year 6 and is based on the National Centre for Computing Education's Teach Computing programme. Children develop their understanding of computer science, information technology and digital literacy through practical, engaging and purposeful learning experiences. 

What will children learn?

Throughout their journey at Caldecote, pupils learn to:

The curriculum builds progressively year on year, ensuring children revisit and deepen their understanding of key concepts. 

A Journey Through Computing

In the Early Years, children begin to explore technology through iPads, computers and programmable toys. They learn how technology can help us, create simple digital content and take their first steps in programming. 

As they move through Key Stage 1, pupils develop their skills in digital writing, digital art, photography, data handling and programming. They learn to create and debug simple algorithms, use technology purposefully and start to understand how information can be organised and presented digitally. 

In Key Stage 2, children deepen their knowledge of computer networks, the internet and digital communication. They create increasingly sophisticated digital products such as animations, podcasts, videos, databases, vector graphics, websites and 3D models. They also develop advanced programming skills, learning about variables, selection, repetition and physical computing. 

Online Safety at the Heart of Learning

Keeping children safe online is a key priority at Caldecote. Online safety is not taught as a standalone unit but is woven throughout every aspect of the computing curriculum from Reception to Year 6.

As pupils progress through the school, they learn how to:

• Keep personal information private.
• Create and manage strong passwords.
• Recognise unreliable or misleading information online.
• Understand copyright and digital ownership.
• Respond appropriately to cyberbullying.
• Identify online risks such as scams, phishing and malicious content.
• Develop a positive digital footprint.
• Report concerns confidently and know where to seek help. 

We encourage children to become thoughtful digital citizens who understand both the opportunities and responsibilities that come with using technology.

Our computing curriculum supports our wider vision of developing successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors. Through challenging and creative activities, pupils learn to think logically, persevere when solving problems, communicate effectively and make informed decisions.
