All schools in England have a Governing Body, which is responsible for overseeing many of the strategic decisions of the school. While the Headteacher is in charge of the day-to-day running of the school, the governors are involved in such areas as finance, staffing, setting targets and analysing data. The role of the Governing Body can be split into three aspects:

  • To provide strategic guidance to the school. This happens through setting aims, policies and priorities for the school; through agreeing targets for the year; through involvement in the appointment of new staff; through agreeing and overseeing the budget.
  • To ensure accountability. The headteacher reports to the Governing Body, and the Governing Body monitors and evaluates the work of the school through school visits; through studying the data on test results, attendance, etc.; through assessing and discussing the headteacher’s reports for governing body meetings.
  • To act as a ‘critical friend’. This means supporting the school staff in their valuable work of providing a suitable education for all children in the school, while at the same time giving constructive criticism when targets are not met.

As well as meeting as a full body throughout the year, governors also sit on two committees to review various aspects of the school's work. These committees are the Pupil and Curriculum Committee and the Personnel, Premises and Finance Committee. Individual governors also have responsibilities for various aspects of the school's work, such as English and Maths and each class has a governor who gets to know how the staff plan to deliver the Caldecote Curriculum, how they work with the whole range of pupils and how targets are set and progress assessed.
